PostSubject: PowerCorps Challenge Updates   Wed May 27, 2009 11:55 pm

Byron's meet will be held June 20th - deadline is the 6th.

A few updates:

1: Yoke walk will not be man vs. man - it will be with separate weight classes simultaneously. Yoke weights may change.

2.The stone in the medley is a Husafel-type steel implement - not really a stone exactly. The weights will be reduced - I get the feeling people are turned off by the thought of running with what they may believe is a 300# atlas stone. It'll be lightened anyway - something like 245 for LW, 265 for HW.

3. A novice division has been added for anyone who has never done a meet - or knows someone who has not and wants to try it out. LW Novice (<231) will use the Teen weights and HW novice (>231) will use the 200# open weights (essentially two weight classes handicap). They will not compete directly against the NAS athletes, though they may be in the same heat as the Teens and 200's.

4. An auxiliary event will take place - loading sandbags over yoke crossbar in time - overall HW/LW winner takes cash - this is not part of the meet but makes for a good show and puts our awesome new K2 bags to use. All competitors would get free entry, with others a $10 fee (no NAS card needed, obviously, just a 'pain-waiver')

Other unique prizes and such will be available too.

Dennis - there are some entries but mostly Teen and 200's - I think Karia Coleman is considering doing the meet too. I don't know of any 266+ yet.

Dennis - four are competing. I MAY do the SHW but that isn't really competing since I'll get my ass kicked and cannot lift the yoke or farmer's.

Brad - take your pick - Teen or 200's.

There's one entry in the 200's and I'll bet you'll wipe the floor with the two or three teens signed up.

Deadline will be extended to the 15th or 16th, FYI.

i printed out the entry form..... which means im going to do it haha. I'm torn between classes because the I'd like 445 for deads and 275 for farmers but that 225 press and 600 yoke will kills me. So I think I'll play it safe and go with the teen class.

Is this going to be outside? (i hope so, I want to get a tan)

Do you guys not have a 220-240 stone for us kids to use? bounce If not I might be able to bring one up if my dad lets me borrow the truck.

Brad, the "stone" is a husafel stone - actually made of steel. We lied. It's not quite 280 - more like 250. Yes, we have plenty of atlas stones - from small to large, but that isn't the focus of the event. We also have lighter field stones to use as well. But the kegs were chosen to give the teens a safer first-time strongman experience.

If you do the teens, it would be a good demonstration to the kids signed up what the teens in strength athletics can do. They're pretty strong, BTW, but have no experience other than football training. Be prepared to have to carry the heavier keg all the way - they can.

oh, and yes, it's outside - weather permitting. If it rains, that will suck. But we have bad-weather contingencies.

Be prepared to get rocked by the sandbag event!

Dan, what are the weights for the viking, yoke, and the medley for the 266 class?

THe weights are printed on the entry form, and are more or less correct.

The viking press is hard to determine because it's a mechanical implement, but the weights are roughly halfway between the pivot and the handles. So the 266 guys will do about 4 plates plus nickel and dime on each side (neutral grip, 21.5" apart). This, plus the implement weight, amounts to 260-285 or so in the hands, closer to 265 I think. Being a 200, I can just barely do one rep with this weight so this gives you a 'sense of scale' on how easy or hard it is for you (I can max out around 275 or so overhead with a barbell, so this seems right). Any squat-jerking method is allowed, BTW, single or double-knee bends, etc - you just can't do half-overhead squats on the way down and count them as reps.

The yoke is 700. It's an extra-heavy-duty yoke with a 1200-lb rating and four loading ends. So far, the weights are the same as they were posted.

The medley will have a 260 keg (says 250, but it weighed in at 260), a husafel-shaped steel implement, which is 240-ish empty and will be filled a bit more for the meet for the HW's. 300 was the weight on the entry but that's overkill - originally I thought the 'stone' as-is was 280 but I was mistaken. I was going by what Detmann said, but he probably emptied it a bit before selling it to me. The tire is an ag-tire like Tony's smaller one in weight (500-ish) but less difficult to flip. Since it is an endurance medley there's no need to bust out a heavier tire IMO.

Brad, by the way, as of today there are 7 teens signed up now (most as of yesterday). Your choice - head-to-head in the 200's or battle 7 teens - all novices, but all very good, I think. Just letting you know what your options are. I won't count if I jump in this meet.

thanks for the option. My main focus is teen nationals and I dont plan on skipping a training session. I'll be doing farmers, chest, back, and calves the day before, so I think its better if I take it easy and compete with the teens. Are there some big boys competing? I'm wondering how many reps I should expect to beat on the deads, and what time I would need to get on the farmers and yoke. I wont be mad if I dont win, as I havent been training for this competition, but it would definately be nice for a change.
