| I know the Circle City Strongest Man contest is in Indiana however anyone thinking of competing is welcome to stop by and train here. I'll be making a go at it and am trying to convince a guy at work to give it a shot. I've never really trained with anyone who was going to the same meet. Should be fun. Tony |

| well, looks like Tony not only didn't embarrass himself in front of the crowd, but did every event, and won the 200's. Privileged individuals got to see the IL chairman compete! By the way, on that note, there was ONE guy who embarrassed himself in front of the crowd, or at least should have felt that way. Other than that, many really solid performances by everyone, especially Jason Nunn who smoked the 231's and Derek and Eric in the 300's.

| Haha, no, it wasn't Tony - everything he did was spot-on - for not really much practice - his performance was all Tony-like - with quiet, businessmanlike efficacy. Tony was almost meditative while he won those 3 events (compare to me who makes lots of noise). Brad, the supposed-to-be embarrassed person to whom I am referring didn't have it all upstairs either, I imagine. There is nothing for you to learn from him except what SHOULD happen to someone who does a platinum show with no real strength or conditioning. I'll give you the details you want - He was a sloppy 300# guy who zeroed everything except the truck pull (in which he shambled to the finish like a drunk) and the 18" axle deadlift (where he got like 400 on his last attempt - something Emily could probably do, 2" axle or not). He couldn't clean the axle, barely could pick it off the ground for that matter, or budge the stone, or move the farmer's across the starting line. Remember Brett Faught when we were in Taylorville last year? His performance was like that - except Brett had an excuse - he was like 145 lbs and just not big enough to play in what was essentially a 231 class (of course, you were in that same boat somewhat weight-wise - just stronger and knew what you were doing). Not to mention Brett had no illusions about this and was just trying it out on-a-lamb, so no shame there. I don't mean to deride anyone who is genuinely trying to get into the sport, but this wasn't a case of someone getting his ass handed to him after having made a serious effort to prepare (the events and weights were no surprise, after all - they tell you what they are, and you should know whether you can lift the weight or not). For a novice/silver meet maybe it's ok, but IMHO NAS Platinum shows shouldn't attract these jokers who bring discredit to the sport. And I'd expect the same treatment if I perform badly with no injury as an excuse. Of course, at least the guy shows how strong a REAL amateur strongman competitor is relative to the average burly gym rat. Anyway, enough of that - the true lightweight freak-on-a-leash was Jason Nunn! Glad I'm a 200 now! Also monster Derek Devaugn - first CSM, then CCSM. I'm sure he could win a 'CCCSM' and a 'CCCCSM' if we can think of convincing names to fit those acronyms |

| Tony- I would have been up there if I knew you were wearing the "breathable chaps" haha. Dan- You're posts are always entertaining. Great story. I bet that was embarrassing just watching the guy lol. It's funny you mention Brett from Taylorville, cause he's still at it actually. He competed in the novice division over at Hope for the holidays this year. |

Ummmm.....did someone tell Brett that he.....actually can't do that?
If you do a NAS-sanctioned competition, you are ineligible to compete as a novice. Did he bring the Taylorville contest results to persuade the promoter that the novice division was a better place for him?
From the looks of it he's improving, though, which is good for him - if all he wants to do is come and play. But let's face it - your body chooses your sport sometimes. 5'3, 150 lbs cannot do WELL in strongman unless they have a 150 division, which will never happen. |

I always thought that too until that contest. Then I just assumed that I was misinformed of the rules. I highly doubt they actually look those kind of things up. They probably just take everyone's word for it. As for the body type, I'm really trying to work on that myself. 165lb doesnt cut it. Hopefully my metabolism slows down soon haha. |

| I do not know the name of the person that zeroed at the contest however he does deserve credit. He entered the contest, had the balls to show up and compete and did what he was able to do. No need to be embarrassed by that. It may have been his first meet, maybe just an off day, or he may have even hit some Pr's with the axle deadlift. Now the only way the guy should be embarrassed is if he was running his mouth on how he'll dominate at the meet. I did not here anything of the sort. I hope he learns from the experience comes back to do another meet. Tony |

Yeah, I guess it does take guts to show up and continue competing under those circumstances - you're right Tony. I was just ASSUMING he thought he was a strong guy who could do this stuff - that he didn't find out (i.e. learn to RESPECT) what was typical of an average competitor ahead of time and work toward performing like one. But who knows - maybe he knew this and still showed up to try it out. And for all I know he could have spent the last year in a wheelchair and this was his first return to athletics after 6 months.
Under the same circumstances I admit I wouldn't have had the courage to show up. He WAS a bit stiff with me when I went to give him some advice on wrapping his knees, but I can understand why, considering how he must have been out of place. I shouldn't take it personally.
Certainly this must have been his first meet. At least now he knows what it really takes to be a competitive amateur strongman. If he uses this experience to learn respect for what strength level is necessary, does his homework and comes back to another meet having made a serious attempt to prepare, no matter what his final placing is, then there is no shame in that, it would be great for him and a welcome addition to the sport. |

| Congrats to Tony! I got my ass handed to me in my first couple contests. To be honest, I wasn't aware of how competitive people really were with it until I showed up at CSM - a platinum contest. I didn't zero on anything, but I was far from stellar. I like to be humbled from time to time though, just adds fuel to the fire. Maybe that guy will come back some time and put on a better showing in the future. |
